Concert Calendar, 2008/9

This calendar covers the period from September 2008 to July 2009

There is an exciting programme this year, with all the usual features and more…

The season commences on September 13th with a concert in memory of Graham Thorne and Leonard Whitehouse, both members for over fifty years who contributed such a lot to the club.
On September 17th there will be a concert of works composed by living and past club members, and on October 11th, after a four-year absence, we will see the return of a concert just for pianists (of which the Club has over 50).
On November 8th we will perform Verdi’s Falstaff at the United Reformed Church, Highgate, and on the 29th November there will be the New Members’ concert, for members who have joined the club within the past year.
On December 13th we will have another “Nothing Too Serious” concert - light-hearted music only!
On January 24th we will hold another Concerto Workshop, allowing club soloists to experience a performance with orchestra.
On February 21st we will have our 2000th formally-numbered concert! To mark this special occasion we are constructing a programme that will involve as many of the membership as we can. We will combine this with our AGM.
On March 14th we are holding an exciting new event - an Opera Workshop. This is intended to give all singers an opportunity to perform a role in an opera, and where the larger/principal roles are concerned priority will be given to those who were not involved in this year’s Falstaff performance. It will comprise approx 3-4 scenes from different operas, and shall be in concert performance format accompanied by piano.
The Open concert will be on March 25th, made up of shortish items (maximum 10 minutes) submitted to the Music Secretary. Do not miss this chance to offer an item for inclusion (particularly if you rarely perform).
On Saturday April 18th there will be a Wind Play Day, and on May 30th a Baroque Opera concert.
On June 24th Genevieve Usher is organising a concert called “New Partnerships”, aimed at people who haven't performed together before, and we finish the season with another orchestral collaboration with Pro Corda.
As well as these we will have eight Chamber concerts.

Wednesday concerts are normally at 8pm in the Haldane Room and Saturday concerts, with the exception of the opera and the AGM, at 5.30pm in the Housman Room at University College, Gower Street. Unfortunately the Haldane Room will be unavailable after Easter 2009, so we have booked the Hinde Street Methodist Church for the Wednesday concerts. Please note that these concerts will all start at 7.30pm.

Graham Bowler, Music Secretary
